Whenever an experiment is conducted, it is important to identify all the possible safety risks and hazards associated with the experiment to ensure the safety of the personnel involved in the experiment. For the chemicals and equipment involved in this experiment, the following HSE considerations were identified:
To minimize predicted risks, the following instructions and the precautions must be considered while performing the experiment.
1.Wear the appropriate PPE.
2.Eating, drinking, and smoking are prohibited in the lab
3.Check for any leakage before the start of the experiment
4.Check the electric supply has the required voltage to avoid any short circuits
5.Avoid touching hot surfaces to avoid burns
6.Do does not exceed the maximum temperature specified by the equipment manufacturer
7.Dropping or spillage of any liquid on the computer wires should be avoided to prevent any electric shocks
8.All lab belongings should be returned and the apparatus should be returned to their base state after the experiment is completed
9.Based on the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for the chemicals involved in the experiment, the following chemical hazards were identified:
a.Cyclohexane: flammable, and cause dizziness if it breathed in or in contact with skin or eyes
b.N-heptane: flammable, cause redness if enters the eyes, causes dizziness if breathed in or touched
10.Some of the direct hazards from the equipment being used include:
a.Cylinder: Make sure the column is secured to avoid any leakage
b.Distillation Column and Reboiler: high-temperature surface, so caution must be practiced to avoid burns
