MEMORIAL CONTROVERSY REPORT (worth 10% of course grade, due Friday November 27 at 11:59).
For Mississippi and Alabama, the student will identify and report on one controversy/dispute over some form of historical commemoration (statue, building or street name, flag, artwork). The student will provide a historical context for the dispute (e.g., if it’s a statue, who is it a statute of, and why is that person controversial) and then provide a chronological report of how the dispute unfolded (who raised the issue, how it became publicized, what arguments were raised by both sides, and what if any resolution was proposed or implemented as a result). The student will conclude the paper by relating the two disputes to particular incidents, issues, or themes raised in the Allison book. Target length: 5-6 pages double-spaced.
