Pursuing a Conflict

Purpose of the Assignment:
Provide opportunity for students to pursue a conflict of individual interest
Develop a way to extend understanding of that interest in an academic manner
Pursue the academic process of researching an idea or concept through reading published material
Exercise some creativity and imagination with regard to conflict

Using a template that I will provide, you will propose such a writing project – including why you chose the particular academic paper and what you think would like learn were to carry out the writing project to completion.

Parameters:

Any conflict is applicable as long as you are not involved in it;

Any paper is applicable as long as it does not already complete the assignment for you; for example, you can’t choose a paper that applies a theory to the same conflict you’ve chosen. Say your conflict is between two children Jenny and Billy. You want to apply Learned Helplessness theory and you have a paper on Learned Helplessness. Excellent, as long as the paper doesn’t apply Learned Helpless to Jenny and Billy. Totally fine though, if the paper applies the theory to Sammy and Chrisy, or to children in general, or adults, or to teams, etc, etc. Just not Jenny and Billy if they are your chosen conflict. Criteria of Evaluation:
The amount you learned as evidenced from your writing about the papers you read
Applicability and creativity of the matching between paper and conflict
Density and clarity of your writing
The degree to which you follow and stay within guidance and boundaries provided by the template

1. What conflict have you chosen to examine? (It can’t be one that you are involved in.)

2. What is your interest in this conflict (50 words)?

3. List four papers that you read in your search to choose one.

4. What did you learn from reading these papers (100 words)?

5. Which is the paper you have chosen and why did you choose it (50 words)?

6. What is the theory or concept that the paper advances (50 words)?
