This weeks readings highlight some of the many ways in which activities of daily life are affected by the social constructions of race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, and ability. It might seem as though these details are informed by personal choice, but consider instead how aspects of one’s identity affect these choices.
Consider the details of your daily lives and attempt to connect the activities of your daily life to categories of race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, gender, and ability. For example, does class influence your selection of foods, both the foods that are available to you and/or what you choose? Now think about how class may influence your clothing, hobbies, interests, or even the ways you are able to raise your children. Does your race or ethnicity affect what school you attend and which careers are available to you? Do any aspects of your identity influence how and where you spend your summers? Does your gender affect what you choose to study at college, or which sports you participate in, or if you want to have plastic surgery? These are just suggestions to think about; feel free to create your own questions and prompts.
